Frequently Asked Questions
What are the early signs of transmission trouble?
Slipping the engine revs but the car does not accelerate to match plus delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse, harsh or jerky shifts, shuddering at light throttle, a burnt smell, and red or brown fluid on the driveway. The burnt smell is the most telling single symptom: it means the fluid has overheated and the clutch material is breaking down.
What is the difference between a transmission flush and a fluid change?
A drain and fill empties the pan and replaces roughly a third to half of the total fluid; the rest stays in the torque converter and cooler lines. A fluid exchange uses equipment that circulates fresh fluid through the system to replace nearly all of it. Which one is correct depends on your manufacturer’s specification some units call for exchange, some for drain and fill only, and a high-mileage transmission that has never been serviced may be better left on a drain and fill.
Why does transmission fluid matter so much?
Transmission fluid does three jobs at once it is the hydraulic medium that actuates the shifts, the lubricant for the gears and bearings, and the coolant for the whole assembly. Heat and shear break it down over time, and once it can no longer hold pressure or carry heat away, clutch and valve body damage follows quickly.
Is “lifetime” transmission fluid really lifetime?
Not in practice. “Fill for life” generally means the life of the manufacturer’s warranty period, not the life of the vehicle, and it assumes conditions most drivers do not have. Heat is what kills transmissions, and towing, hills and stop-and-go traffic all generate it. Most transmissions labeled lifetime-fill benefit from a fluid service well before failure.
Can my transmission be repaired, or does it need to be rebuilt or replaced?
It depends on where the failure is. Solenoids, valve bodies, sensors, external leaks and mount problems are repairable in place. Internal clutch or hard-part failure means a rebuild or a replacement unit. We rebuild in-house on some makes and models, but we usually recommend a remanufactured unit the supplier warranties are stronger and you get your vehicle back faster. Most reman units come with 3-year/36,000-mile coverage from the remanufacturer and some carry 100,000-mile terms. We will give you the specific coverage in writing before the work starts.
Do you service CVTs, dual-clutch and manual transmissions?
Yes CVTs, dual-clutch transmissions and manuals, in addition to conventional automatics. Each requires its own fluid specification and service procedure, and CVTs in particular are unforgiving about the wrong fluid. All four locations.
