Unfortunately, catalytic converter theft has become a big problem in the San Diego area. The piece, which is located on the underside of your car and helps regulate harmful emissions, is becoming a favorite of thieves, and some insurance companies are requiring anti-theft shields be placed over them. Does servicing my car at an independent shop void my factory warranty?
No. The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits a manufacturer from conditioning warranty coverage on dealer service unless that service is free. What you do need is the manufacturer-specified parts and fluids and a documented record that scheduled service was performed on time. We use OE-specification parts and keep that record for you.

What is included in preventative maintenance?
Engine oil and filter changes, air and cabin filter replacement, fluid inspection and service (coolant, brake, transmission, differential and transfer case), spark plugs at the specified interval, belts and hoses, tire rotation, brake inspection, and a full safety inspection. What is actually due depends on your vehicle’s factory schedule, not a package.

What maintenance is due at 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 miles?
Those milestones typically bring deeper inspections plus replacement of wear items fluids, filters, belts, and spark plugs at the longer intervals. The specifics vary widely by manufacturer, so the schedule should be pulled for your exact vehicle rather than assumed. A 60,000-mile service on a turbocharged European car and on a Corolla are not the same job.

How do I find out what my car actually needs at this mileage?
We look up the factory-scheduled maintenance for your specific vehicle by VIN, which accounts for engine, drivetrain and any manufacturer-specific requirements. Then we apply 50 years of experience to it. Most manufacturers publish both a normal and a severe-service schedule, and San Diego stop-and-go driving is closer to severe than most owners realize so the interval that is right for your car is not always the one on the first page of the manual.

Is a 30/60/90K service at an independent shop the same as at the dealer?
It should be the same work to the same specification – the factory schedule is published, the fluids and parts are specified, and an independent shop can meet all of it. The differences are typically cost, scheduling, and whether you deal with the same technician each visit. Warranty eligibility is unaffected.

Will you show me what needs to be fixed before I approve it?
Yes every inspection includes photos and video of what we found, sent to you before you approve anything. You see the worn pad, the leaking seal, the cracked boot. You are not taking our word for it, and you are not approving a line item you cannot picture.
