Frequently Asked Questions

Do hybrids need different maintenance than gas cars?
Yes. Hybrids still need oil changes, brakes, tires and alignment, but they add a high-voltage battery pack, an inverter and cooling system, regenerative braking, and an electric transaxle. High-voltage work requires specific training and insulated tooling to do safely our technicians hold ASE L3 hybrid and electric vehicle certification, and hybrid service is available at all four locations.

Why do hybrid brake pads last longer – and why do hybrid brakes still need service?
Regenerative braking uses the electric motor to slow the car and recover energy, so the friction brakes do far less work and pads routinely last two to three times longer. The catch is that brakes still need service because those that are rarely used seize and corrode. Hybrids need caliper slide lubrication and rotor inspection on schedule even when the pads still measure new.

What are the signs a hybrid battery is failing?
A sharp drop in fuel economy, the gas engine running constantly instead of cycling off, the state-of-charge gauge swinging rapidly between high and low, reduced power under acceleration, and a hybrid system warning light. A failing pack commonly sets a P0A80 code identifying the specific failed module.

Is my hybrid battery still under the factory warranty?
Possibly, and it is worth checking before paying for replacement. Federal law sets a minimum of 8 years/100,000 miles on the high-voltage battery. California PZEV-certified vehicles carry up to 10 years/150,000 miles. From the 2026 model year, California’s Advanced Clean Cars II rules add capacity and range-retention requirements on top of that. Bring your VIN and we can help you check coverage.

Do you replace hybrid batteries, or do I have to go to the dealer?
You do not have to go to the dealer. We replace full hybrid battery packs, repair at the module level when only part of the pack has failed, and install reconditioned packs whichever fits the vehicle and your budget. Module-level repair in particular can cost a fraction of a full pack replacement, and it is work most independent shops refer out rather than perform. Available at all four locations.

Is hybrid battery replacement covered by a warranty?
Yes. Hybrid drive battery replacement is covered under our NAPA AutoCare Peace of Mind warranty for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, and it is honored at participating NAPA AutoCare facilities nationwide not just at our shops. That is unusual for hybrid battery work at an independent shop, and it is the reason a lot of our hybrid customers stop paying dealer prices.

Which hybrids do you service?
All of them. Toyota and Lexus, Honda, Ford, Hyundai and Kia, and the European hybrids our technicians are ASE L3 certified and we service hybrids at all four San Diego County locations. If it is a hybrid, bring it in.
