Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs of serious engine trouble?
Persistent knocking or tapping from the engine, colored fluid puddles under the vehicle (brown or black for oil, green or orange for coolant, red for transmission or power steering), blue, white or black exhaust smoke, and a clear loss of power. A clear puddle is usually just air conditioning condensate and is normal.

What causes an engine to overheat?
Overheating almost always traces to the cooling system: a leaking radiator or hose, a failed thermostat, a worn water pump, a plugged radiator, or coolant that has degraded past its service life. Stop-and-go traffic and inland summer heat in Poway and Vista expose a marginal cooling system that seems fine on the freeway.

What should I do if my engine starts overheating while I am driving?
Turn off the air conditioning, turn the heater on full to pull heat out of the engine, and pull over as soon as it is safe. Do not open the radiator cap on a hot engine. Continuing to drive an overheating engine is what turns a hose or thermostat repair into a warped cylinder head or a replacement engine.

Is it worth repairing an older engine or should it be replaced?
It depends on the failure and the condition of the rest of the vehicle. Head gaskets, timing components, water pumps and gasket leaks are usually well worth repairing on an otherwise sound car. Damage inside the block spun bearings, scored cylinders, a thrown rod – is where replacement typically makes more sense.

Do you replace engines, and do you use new, remanufactured or used engines?
Yes, we do full engine replacement, and we will source new, remanufactured or used depending on the vehicle and what makes sense for you. We steer away from used engines unless the mileage is genuinely low putting a used engine in a customer’s car too often means handing them somebody else’s problem instead of solving their own.

What warranty comes with a replacement engine?
It depends on what goes in. New and remanufactured engines carry the engine manufacturer’s own warranty, and terms vary by supplier and unit we will give you the exact coverage in writing before you approve the work. Our NAPA nationwide warranty covers a wide range of repairs but does not extend to internal engine work or engine assembly replacement, so the engine’s own warranty is what protects you there. We will walk you through both.

How long does engine repair take, and do you have loaner cars?
Engine work is quoted with a timeline before it starts, since parts availability drives most of the variance. If the vehicle has to stay with us, we offer free loaner cars subject to availability – just ask when you drop off.
