Full-Service Auto Repair In San Diego County
You know your car best. That subtle new sound, a change in how it drives, or worse – an illuminated check engine light – can be concerning. When your vehicle has a mystery problem, or a dashboard warning appears, you need accurate answers fast. At Aero Auto Repair in the San Diego area, our expert technicians use cutting-edge diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact issue, getting you reliable solutions you can trust.
Unraveling Your Car's Mystery: Computer Diagnostics
Modern vehicles are equipped with sophisticated onboard computer systems that monitor everything from your engine’s performance to emission levels. When something isn’t right, these computers record “trouble codes.”
At Aero Auto Repair, we utilize state-of-the-art computer diagnostic equipment to connect directly with your vehicle’s systems. Our process involves:
- Reading Trouble Codes: Our diagnostic scanner communicates with your car’s computer to retrieve specific codes.
- Analyzing Data: Our experienced technicians analyze the data, which often points towards potential issues.
- Thorough Visual Inspection: We combine the diagnostic data with a hands-on inspection to confirm the root cause of the problem.
This comprehensive approach allows us to accurately identify what’s wrong, whether it’s an engine issue, a transmission problem, or something else. We’ll then clearly explain our findings and discuss your repair options before any work begins, so you can make an informed decision.
Decoding Your Check Engine Light
The check engine light is arguably the most dreaded dashboard warning because it’s so vague. It could signal a minor issue, like a loose gas cap, or something much more serious affecting your engine, exhaust, or transmission. Guessing can lead to bigger, more expensive problems down the road.
When your check engine light comes on, it’s essential to get it checked by professionals. Our diagnostic experts will accurately read the codes, perform the necessary tests, and provide you with a precise diagnosis, taking the guesswork out of the equation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a check engine light diagnostic include?
A real diagnostic starts with the trouble codes but does not stop there. The technician reviews live sensor data, freeze-frame data from when the fault set, then performs circuit testing and physical inspection to identify which component or wiring actually failed. The code narrows the search area; testing identifies the cause.
Do you do smog checks?
Yes, at two of our four locations – Serra Mesa (9756 Aero Drive) and Vista (1215 N Melrose Dr). Both are licensed Smog Check stations. Neither is STAR certified, so if your DMV renewal notice says “STAR station only,” you will need to test at a STAR facility. We can still diagnose and repair whatever is causing the failure at any of our four locations.
Will my car pass smog with the check engine light on?
No. In California, an illuminated check engine light is an automatic failure of the OBD portion of the Smog Check. The fault has to be diagnosed and repaired, and then the vehicle’s readiness monitors have to run and complete through normal driving. California has no separate periodic safety inspection.
Why did my car fail smog for “monitors not ready”?
Because the codes were cleared – disconnecting the battery or clearing with a scan tool resets every readiness monitor to “not ready,” and the vehicle has to be driven through a full drive cycle before they set. As of October 1, 2025, BAR allows only the evaporative monitor to be incomplete on 2000-and-newer gasoline vehicles, and only the DPF and NMHC catalyst monitors on 2007-and-newer diesels. For help getting these set, ask about our monitors not ready services.
Why not just use the free code scan at the auto parts store?
A parts-store scan reads the code and stops there. A code like “Oxygen Sensor Circuit” names a circuit, not a failed part – the cause could be the sensor, a chafed wire, a connector, or an exhaust leak upstream. Buying the part the code names is how people replace two or three components before finding the actual fault.
Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
A steady light usually means you can drive to a shop, but do not ignore it. A flashing check engine light means an active misfire that can destroy the catalytic converter within minutes pull over, reduce load, and have the vehicle towed rather than driven. If the light comes with overheating, low oil pressure or loss of power, stop immediately.
Is the diagnostic fee credited toward the repair?
Usually not, and we would rather tell you up front than surprise you. Diagnostic work is often the hardest part of the job, and every repair we perform is backed by our nationwide warranty – we cannot stand behind a diagnosis we were not paid to perform. Separately, if another shop has already quoted you and you want a second opinion, we offer a free 15-minute inspection to sanity-check what you have been told. That is a different service from a full diagnostic, and we will be clear about which one you are getting.
